High School Musical fans left baffled by Troy and Gabriella update | Films | Entertainment

High School Musical fans were taken aback by Troy Bolton (played by Zac Efron) and Gabriella Martinez’s (Vanessa Hudgens) fate as confirmed in the spin-off. 

The fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series made its way to Disney this week with appearances from some of the film’s original stars. 

Corbin Belu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel and Kaycee Stroh all returned to reprise their roles as Chad, Taylor, Ryan and Martha respectively for the final episodes. 

It was during an early scene from the fourth series that Chad shared updates on all their high school friends and where they are now. 

While it was good news for most of the former East High students, fans were surprised when it came to hearing about Troy and Gabriella.

Corbin stated that even though the high school sweethearts were still together after 15 years, they were currently going through “couples therapy”. 

Of course, viewers couldn’t help but take to Twitter to react to this unexpected update, many in disbelief that the pair were having marital problems. 

One fan wrote: “Troy and Gabriella in couples therapy omg????” 

Another said: “Lol Gabriella and Troy in couples therapy yikes LOL”, whereas a third commented: “Whoever wrote that Troy and Gabriella future looks like was so messy for that I cackled”.

In the series Coach Bolton (Bart Johnson) asked Martha if she had heard from the couple, to which she replied: “They have been silent in the group chat”. 

It had been hoped that Efron and Hudgens would reprise their roles for the last series but they have not appeared. 

Series creator Tim Federle told People last year that they had invited all of the original HSM stars but sadly, the leading man and lady did not accept the opportunity. 

It wasn’t all bad news as many of the main characters did get what they wanted.

In the show, Chad and Taylor are still happily married and Ryan is preparing to welcome twins with his partner Pentatonix singer Scott Hoying. 

Martha is also an acclaimed choreographer but there has been no mention of what Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) is up to now.
