‘I’m fighting with my neighbours as their sex life is so loud it is frightening my kids’

A father-of-six confessed he has gotten into a massive argument with his neighbours over their loud sex life, which left them “mad and embarrassed”. 

The 43-year-old man recently posted to Reddit’s ‘AmItheA**hole’ forum to complain about his new neighbours, who have been living next door for only a few months, but he is worried he may have taken the fight too far. 

In his post, the man wrote he has four daughters and two sons ranging from ages two to 16, and his neighbour’s bedroom is right next to his five-year-old daughter’s bedroom. 

The man explained that his neighbours had a habit of being too loud, but chose to ignore it as he dislikes being “confrontational”. However, his daughter recently came into his bedroom late at night crying after being frightened by the noises she was hearing. 

He wrote: “She thinks the neighbours are fighting each other and that they were screaming. Of course, l was concerned and told my daughter to stay in my room, I went into hers and low and behold they were screaming. But not from fighting.”

The man soon became “irritated” by the commotion and realised that his neighbours have been keeping his children awake due to their loud bedroom life. 

He wrote: “If they want to do it every day that’s their choice but if they’re waking my children up at 2am I think I have the right to say something.”

The next day, the father went over to his neighbour’s house to confront the couple, and it led to a full-blown argument. 

The man wrote: “[I] basically told the husband that ‘if he’s that horny he can get a motel or [have sex] in the basement’.

“[The neighbour] got mad, and embarrassed. He told me it was none of my business what they did in bed and then slammed the door in my face.”

The man asked the forum if he was right or wrong to get into an argument over something so personal, as he felt guilty yet justified as the couple were “doing it, six feet away from six sleeping children with only a thin wall in between.”

The father’s post has proven to be controversial, as many users commented to say they believed he was in the wrong. One popular comment said: “Yeah they’re annoying, but they have a right to do whatever they want in their own home, you were inappropriate” 

Another user said: “They’ve got a room, and they pay for it, just like you do. They fill their house with noisy sex, and you filled yours with the result of noisy sex. I’d’ve slammed the door in your face, too.” 

Someone else wrote: “There is absolutely nothing wrong with a married couple having sex in their own home, wherever and whenever they want. That was a ridiculous comment for you to make.

However, some users were on the father’s side. One person commented: “Yes these people are free to have sex in their home, no argument. What they are not allowed to do is be so loud it disturbs neighbours, especially after 10-11pm when many places have ordinances on noise.

Another user said: “It’s disgusting that they are being so loud that it is scaring kids. You should call the police about a noise disturbance. They’re the ones in the wrong, I can’t believe how many people are taking the neighbours’ side.”
