Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton both love royal style that was considered ‘controversial’

A great deal of thought goes into the attire of the Royal Family, particularly the women’s.

With access to the very best fabrics, designers and fashion houses, the royals are a stylish bunch and rarely miss when it comes to what’s fashionable yet appropriate.

However, the Royal Family are only human and there have been occasions where the individuals within it have made the odd fashion faux pas.

Personal stylist Melissa Lund spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about the family’s “controversial” fashion moments.

She stated: “Members of the Royal Family haven’t always got it right over the years.

The midnight blue floor-length gown, designed by Victor Edelstein, was inspired by Edwardian fashion.

She first wore it at the White House in 1985, but donned it again in 1987 in Germany and 1988 for the premiere of Wall Street.

Legend John Travolta even remembers the iconic dress, once telling Yahoo Entertainment that it was “so specific” he could probably sketch it in his mind.

Interestingly, both Kate, Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle have both worn off-the-shoulder gowns, which suggests it was the time rather than the style that made it controversial.

On May 19, 2022, Kate mesmerised at the Top Gun: Maverick Royal Film Performance at Leicester Square wearing an off-the-shoulder two tone gown.

The white and black gown was a Roland Mouret creation, one of the Princess’ favourites.

On December 6, 2022, Meghan Markle wore a stunning custom off-the-shoulder white Louis Vuitton gown for the 2022 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Gala.

Melissa Lund is a personal stylist, personal shopper and image coach. She also spoke to Express.co.uk about which Kate Middleton outfit received “tremendous criticism” – even though it wasn’t her fault.
