A woman took to the parenting forum and social media platform Mumsnet to share her frustration over her next-door neighbour who reportedly shouted at her for hosting a BBQ while she was drying laundry in the garden.
The forum user asked: “Should I have warned her in advance? Do you inform your next-door neighbours every time youâre having a BBQ?” and her post was inundated with comments from other mums with divided opinions.
The woman, with username @Lolabear38, explained that she and her family had a BBQ over the weekend, and on Monday her neighbour “looked mightily annoyed”.
The next-door neighbour reportedly told her: “Next time you decide to have a stinking BBQ in your garden please let me know in advance.
“My washing was out drying and it got ruined. I had to do the whole lot again,” the angry neighbour added.

She replied: “Iâm really sorry, I didnât even think. Next time Iâll give you a knock and you can take your washing in.”
The woman claimed that her neighbour then said: “No, I wonât be taking my washing in, if I have washing out you wonât be able to have a BBQ!”
She admitted that it didnât even occur to her to let the neighbour know she was having a BBQ and asked other users for advice.
The majority of forum users opined that her neighbour seems “awful” and that they “never pre-warn any neighbor about a BBQ”.
A woman with username @bibbityboppityboo said that her neighbour sounds “mightily rude, your reply was polite and to be honest what else did she expect?”
However, others explained that they normally warn their neighbours, especially those living in semi-detached houses.
One said: “I would warn my immediate neighbour if I saw they had washing out, but I wouldn’t change my plans because they chose to leave it out.”
@BungleandGeorge explained: “If you can see washing next door it would be kind to warm them. Nobody wants to have to re-do an entire load and those with breathing problems can be quite affected by charcoal BBQs.”
Another one suggested: “I wouldn’t normally notify the neighbours but if I saw my neighbour’s laundry was out and we were friendly I’d probably give them a heads up. She was pretty rude to you though, and she can’t stop you having a BBQ!”
