New Superman David Coranswet cast to replace Henry Cavill | Films | Entertainment

Fans are still reeling from all the abrupt gear changes in the DC Extended Universe, especially the poor treatment of Henry Cavill’s Superman, as recent releases Black Adam and The Flash tank at the box office.

Incoming DC studio head James Gunn has been very clear he wants a fresh start for Superman Legacy and rumours have been swirling over the past week of the final round of castings.

A small group of actors has been undergoing the all-important chemistry tests to get the best combination of talents.

Three male and three female actors, including Nicholas Hoult, were on the short list for the roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

Earlier today, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the final pair standing and fans will be very, very happy.

The three in contention for Superman were Hoult, fellow Brit and Grantchester star Tom Brittney, and Us rising star David Coranswet.

The Lois trio were Sex Education’s Emma Mackey, Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dyvenor and The Marvellous Mrs Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan.

Earlier today an early leak claimed Mackey had nabbed the role, but has been proved wrong. THR went social with their announcement of the leads and Gunn was quick to confirm.

It’s an all-American sweep as the new Superman with be Coranswet with Brosnahan as his beloved Lois.

In response to the revelation, Gunn tweeted: “Accurate! (They are not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people).”

Coranswet, 29, is the spitting image of a younger, coltish Cavill. He is best known for starring roles in two of Ryan Murphy’s high-profile series – The Politician and Hollywood, and will also be seen in the upcoming Apple TV show Lady in the Lake.

many were rooting for Mackey but Brosnahan is a multi-award winner and Gunn has always shown perfect judgment in juggling cast chemistry across ensemble movies from Suicide Squad to Guardian of the Galaxy.

It’s currently highly rumoured that the new Lex Luthour with be Bill Skarsgård, also rumoured to have beaten his brother Alexander to the role.

However, there have been persistent rumours that Hoult was actually in contention for the villainous role.

What is certain is that all the various names that have been in the mix are exciting, highly regarded actors, which bodes well for Gunn’s reboot of the consistently troubled WB handling of the DC comicbook source materials.

The Flash, Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods were all absolute commercial disasters, matched by overwhelming fan fury and lack of faith in the studio after its bungling of the fine actors positioned by Zack Snyder in his Justice League.

Gunn recently reassured fans when he declared: “I completely relate to Superman because he’s everything I am. He’s somebody who is an outsider who feels like an alien, but also the ultimate insider, because he’s f***ing Superman. And that’s kind of like what I feel like.”
