One Piece author teases ship’s doctor for season 2 – Tony Tony Chopper explained | Books | Entertainment

After breaking Netflix records, hitting No 1 in 84 countries around the world, the One Piece live-action adaptation is getting a second series.

Eiichiro Oda, author of the manga the show is based on, announced the news in a special video with his face covered by a fish drawing as usual, to protect his privacy.

Using a Den Den Mushi (a telepathic snail for communication in the One Piece world), Oda addressed his fans.

The 48-year-old said: “Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news… Netflix has decided to renew the show!

“The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward! It’ll still take a while to get the scripts ready, so please be patient.” He then made a big tease for season 2.

Oda added: “From here on, it seems to me the Straw Hats will need a great doctor… we will see!”

The author then turned back to his desk and drew a sketch of a much-loved One Piece character called Tony Tony Chopper.

In the manga and anime, he’s a reindeer who ate a Devil Fruit which allows him to transform into a human hybrid at will.

Luffy and his Straw Hat pirates come across Tony Tony Chopper early on after arriving on the Grand Line, the dangerous stretch of ocean where they hope to find Gold Roger’s One Piece treasure.

Without going into spoilers, Chopper lives on a Winter Island that is the location of the Drum Kingdom.

He has an incredibly tragic backstory and ends up joining the crew as the ship’s doctor. No doubt incorporating him into live-action will prove a challenge as he’ll almost certainly be a CG character, just as fan art has already been speculating
