The combined blue and burgungy of their outfits appeared to be a nod to Aston Villa FC; Prince William’s favourite football team, based in Birmingham.

The Prince of Wales, who is president of the Football Association, recently watched the team play alongside his eldest son Prince George, who also appears to be an avid fan.

In 2015, Prince William was clear about his support to the team, telling Gary Lineker: “A long time ago at school I got into football big time.

“All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans and I didn’t want to follow the run of the mill teams.

“I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments. Aston’s villa always had a great history.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales spent the day in the city to celebrate its diverse culture and heritage, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.

The couple first visited the Indian Streatery, a family-run independent Indian restaurant based in the city centre, where they tried their hands at making Indian rotis and roll out dough for flatbread.

Kate and William later paid a visit to one of the city most prized restaurants, The Rectory, which has rich history spanning back decades.

For their final engagement, the pair met with representatives of the creator sector, including designers, artists and playwright, before meeting members of the public.
