SCOTUS refuses to delay prison sentence for ex-Trump aide Navarro. Justices uphold lower court decision. Navarro must report as scheduled.

Peter Navarro, a former Trump White House adviser, is set to report to prison on Tuesday as scheduled, despite his attempts to delay his sentence being denied by the Supreme Court on Monday.

Chief Justice John Roberts, in a brief statement, upheld the lower courts’ decisions to reject Navarro’s plea for a stay of his sentence.

Although Navarro’s appeal is still pending, he will have to begin serving his four-month sentence in the meantime.

Navarro was convicted in September on two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the House Select Committee’s investigation into the January 6th Capitol riot.

Despite his emergency appeal to the Supreme Court, arguing that he is not a flight risk, Navarro’s efforts to avoid prison have been unsuccessful.

During his trial, Navarro’s refusal to testify about his involvement in delaying the certification of the 2020 election was a key point of contention.

Navarro’s attorney claimed that he is being unjustly targeted and plans to appeal the conviction in hopes of clearing his name.

Navarro will be the first former Trump adviser to serve time in connection with the events of January 6th, setting a precedent for future legal proceedings.
