Emma Devin is making around £4,400 per month selling children’s books, published by Usborne, which range from early years picture books to fact-filled non-fiction to YA books aimed at teenagers.
The mother of two used to work full-time as a careers adviser in a school, earning £26,000 a year. However, after having her second child, she wanted to spend more time at home, being with her young children so was looking for flexible ways she could earn some cash.
As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, Britons are constantly looking for ways to make extra money. By taking on a side hustle, they make extra money monthly to put towards bills.
After taking redundancy from the school she worked at she started to research jobs that she could do from home and found Usborne.
She said: “It seemed ideal for what I needed – I’ve always loved books and am passionate about reading so the opportunity to work with books and do so flexibly with the freedom I wanted, was incredibly exciting.”
The mother of two is encouraging anyone looking for a flexible source of income to consider direct selling.
It has taken her hard work and determination to build her direct selling business to the point it has reached currently, however, the flexibility is what makes it worth it she explained.
She said: “The great thing about direct selling is that I can scale my work up and down as and when I need to. For example, recently when energy bills have increased and our food shop has crept up, I am able to scale my business up.
“Likewise, if we need to save for something I can invest more time and aim to increase my sales. My direct selling income helps us afford the day-to-day things – the mortgage, bills, the children’s lunches, clothes and bus fares.
“We recently had a new bathroom fitted, and my work with Usborne paid for this.”
Her success didn’t come over night, Emma has spent years perfecting her craft and building up a loyal audience.
She started direct selling with Usborne just over a decade ago in 2012. At the beginning she set out to earn £1,000 per month; that’s what I needed to ensure we could pay our bills.
However, it took me about two years to reach that goal.
She added: “I have now built my business to a level that I earn approximately £4,400 per month. It took patience and dedication to get to this point, but I wouldn’t say it has ever felt like hard work because I enjoy it so much and it fits so well around the rest of my life.
“I have never looked back, and I could never see myself doing a traditional 9-5 job again. I’m really delighted with the success I’ve had and am incredibly grateful for the flexibility it has given me.”
Usborne Community Partnerships was established in 1981 and is a division of award-winning children’s publisher Usborne.
Usborne is part of the Direct Selling Association (DSA), which is the only recognised trade body for direct selling companies in the UK and helps to promote best practice.
