Elvis Presley refused to date Marilyn Monroe due to one of her physical traits | Music | Entertainment

Elvis Presley met and bonded with countless women over the years – but none were, perhaps, as famous as the legendary Marilyn Monroe. In June 1960, Elvis reportedly met the blonde bombshell behind the scenes at Paramount Studios, but it was just for a few minutes before they parted ways. However, management agent Byron Raphael was apparently instrumental in bringing the two stars together once again, and the Hollywood icons had one thing on their minds.

Bryon told Playboy and the New York Post in 2006 that, although Marilyn had turned down a few opportunities to work with Elvis on some publicity dates, he would not let her turn down a secret rendezvous behind closed doors.

“He was very embarrassed,” Byron remembered of Elvis. “But Presley didn’t give up and secretly set up a meeting.” Two weeks later Byron received a call from Elvis. He simply told him: “I want you to pick up Marilyn.”

“It was a rainy night and I brought her to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and we went upstairs to his room,” he remembered. “When he saw her, they came together and, without a word, started kissing.”

Byron admitted he was instantly placed in a state of “shock” and didn’t know what to do.

Marilyn sensually told Elvis: “You’re pretty good for a guitar player,” as Byron looked on in amazement. “After two minutes,” he went on. “They went into the bedroom and I didn’t know if I was supposed to leave, or stay and wait for them, so I sort of just dozed off.”

He continued: “The next thing I knew I was startled awake by the door opening and I dove behind the bar. And they both walked out stark naked. I didn’t say a word, I just stayed quiet.” After that, Elvis called a cab for Marilyn.

But when Byron later spoke with the King of Rock and Roll about dating Marilyn, he was deathly opposed to the idea.

Elvis flatly told Byron: “She’s a nice gal, but a little tall for me.”

According to The Marilyn Monroe Collection, the American actress was around 5ft 5 inches tall – placing her at around average height for a woman in her 30s.

Elvis, on the other hand, was around 5ft 9 inches tall, meaning he towered over her with room to spare. So then, why did Elvis think Marilyn was no good for him?

Well, as a comparison, the woman Elvis would eventually go on to marry, Priscilla Presley, was approximately 5ft 3 inches when they got married – so perhaps he just preferred women a little shorter.

Although this story of Elvis meeting up for a sordid affair with the legendary Marilyn Monroe is titivating, his closest friends denied it ever happened.

Joe Esposito, a member of Elvis’ entourage, the Memphis Mafia, said they only met once in June 1960.

He said they met “at Paramount Studios one time”. He went on: “Him and I were walking to the dressing room and she was walking towards us at the same time and that’s when he met her. It was just a small, nice little conversation.”

He added: “He gave her a hug and all that stuff… Probably for about three minutes, and that was it.”
