hmv signs second artist to exclusive 1921 Records label | Music | Entertainment

High street icon hmv last year announced the birth of their music label: 1921 Records.

The label, which is named after the year The Gramophone Company originally opened His Master’s Voice (HMV) in London’s Oxford Street, this week announced the second artist to join its prestigious roster thus far.

Mama Oh No is a four-piece British and Danish “fuzzy R&B and soul band” coming from Norfolk, and are ecstatic to join the ranks of hmv’s musical team.

Just a few years old (having formed in 2019) the band have been described as “dark, haunting and cinematic sound filled with raw, emotive bluesy vocals”.

They were chosen after a performance in Norwich’s hmv store, and now the release date of their debut vinyl has been announced.

Mama Oh No’s first album, Mamasaura, will hit store shelves on October 27, 2023 – and you can preorder it right now at hmv.com here.

Jack Blair, a member of the band, said: “It’s crazy to comprehend that a gig in a store could lead to this. We’re over the moon to be signed to 1921 Records, a label with the might of hmv behind it.”

hmv’s managing director, Phil Halliday, added: “The launch of 1921 Records last year was a huge success. We’re proud of our label and want to continue giving local artists creating incredible music a nationwide platform to make their mark.

“Mama Oh No’s music is special. We’re thrilled to make them our second signing to 1921 Records and can’t wait to get their fantastic album into the homes of music fans across the country.”

Mama Oh No’s signing follows that of India Arkin, who released her debut record Home Truths on October 15, 2022.
