The announcement also came as a surprise as Disney previously shared plans to release a live-action remake of the first Moana film with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as demigod Māui.

The logline for the upcoming release described Moana 2 as an “expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.”

It adds: ‘After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
