Potholes are areas of a road where the surface layer has developed cracks and broken away – forming a hole.

They usually form from surface cracks, water and traffic. Small surface cracks can expand over time due to the amount of traffic.

Water can then get into the cracks of the pavement and expand during freezing weather.
