MTV Europe Music Awards called off due to security concerns amid Israel-Hamas war | Ents & Arts News

The MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony has been cancelled due to security concerns “given the volatility of world events”, organisers have announced.

The annual event had been due to take place in Paris on Sunday 5 November, with stars including Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj among the high-profile nominees.

In a statement announcing the decision, a spokesperson for Paramount, which owns MTV, said: “Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life.

“The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning.”

Organisers said they look forward to the event returning in November 2024.

Last year’s MTV European Music Awards event – which is separate to the MTV Video Music Awards, held in the US – was dominated by Swift, who took home four of the six gongs she was up for: best artist, best video, best pop and best longform video.

The ceremony takes place in a different country every year, and last year was held in Dusseldorf, Germany, and hosted by celebrity power couple, Oscar-winning writer Taika Waititi and singer Rita Ora.

The announcement of this year’s cancellation came on Thursday as European Union interior ministers debated how to manage the impact of the war.

France is on its highest level of security alert after a schoolteacher was killed and three other people were wounded in a stabbing in the northeastern city of Arras on 13 October.

The country’s interior minister, Gerald Darmanin, said the suspected Islamist attack was linked to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

On Wednesday, eight French airports faced security alerts and several were evacuated for checks, the French Civil Aviation Authority said, while the Palace of Versailles closed again due to its third security scare in five days.
